About Us

the hullabaloo values

We are entirely defined and driven by our principles and research extensively to ensure our produce is sustainably and ethically sourced. Ideally from local producers and organic growers.
Produce that cannot be sourced locally, for example, coffee and chocolate will come from proven ethical and responsible suppliers.
We focus on healthy, nutritious food, where possible organic and plenty of allergy-free options.
We have a food and package waste reduction policy, promote environmental awareness, and have a principle of inclusion and accessibility for those on lower incomes.

Jennie

“I have been organising food events, managing cafes for independent companies and have started a surplus food initiative but never had my own cafe with the option of running it with the ethics and community objectives that are important to me.

This is my opportunity to make my own contribution locally and hopefully to Inspire people to think about how we live our lives and use resources.

To experience the benefits of being connected to the wider community through my passion of wholesome food”

Jon

The Greek philosopher Epicurus said 'The key to a fulfilled existence is to be self sufficient and to eat with others'

“There are Cafes I love in London, Brighton, Hastings, Norwich, Cambridge which are independent, creative, and interesting, somewhere where I might meet other like minded people, eat “real” food and have a unique experience.  It is so clear to me what makes them special, and its the combination of right environment, right food and right ethics.   I always felt that one day I would be part of creating a space for sharing ideas, culture, music, a place where jazz, classical or world music can be heard.  Where community activities thrive, one that is welcoming and accessible to all”

Hullabaloo's story

Hullabaloo is unmistakeably a “family” business.  Its founders Jennie Debenham & Jon Halls have 3 children Jesse, Oonagh, and Bo.  The last two were born Dec 2019 and have spent many hours in prime cafe window seats while passers-by coo and mum and dad try to work!

Hullabaloo was the first plant-based cafe in Ipswich and we quickly gained a reputation for keeping a specialized & small seasonal menu made from fresh ingredients and a unique curated design style that was colourful and welcoming.

In March 2019 we were selected as finalists in the Suffolk Food and Drink Awards and in May won the title “Best Cafe”

This boosted us to take the plunge from fringe suburbia to Town Centre and in June 2019 the Town Mayor opened our new premises in St Peters St.

Poppies Care Farm

Poppies Care Farm provides a safe environment for people to challenge their limitations and boundaries, learn, achieve, and be a contributing member of a community.

People with learning difficulties and mental health challenges are part of a team that help with all aspects of farm life: developing practical skills, gaining in confidence and self-esteem, increasing social skills and a sense of belonging.

Every member sets personal goals to work towards, and we keep daily diaries recording activity and progress.  This system helps us identify challenges and achievements so that we can provide support and celebrate success.
